Darlington Parks Win Green Flag Awards

It is well known that Darlington is a desirable market town with plenty of shops, historical sites (especially pertaining to the birth of the railways), cinemas and theatres, but did you also know that it has fantastic outdoor spaces?

Three of Darlington’s green areas have been judged to be among the best in the UK, being awarded the esteemed Green Flag Award. Two of Darlington’s parks, West Park and South Park, alongside the town’s West Cemetery have been awarded this international honour which aims to celebrate and acknowledge the importance of high quality parks and other outdoor spaces and signifies to the wider public that a space meets high environmental standards, has excellent facilities for visitors to enjoy and is well looked after and maintained.

As the first park in Darlington, dating back to Victorian times, South Park has become a special place for the whole community, with its lake, café, skate park, bowling green and bandstand. West Park is a more modern green area for residents to enjoy, with wildflower meadows and sculptures. Opened in 2005, West Park was the first new park in Darlington for 100 years. The third location to receive the award – West Cemetery – has been the final resting place of many of Darlington’s most prominent residents since 1858.

In addition, there are Stanhope Park, North Lodge Park and the Denes which are all close to the centre of town. Further afield there are local nature reserves to explore, including Drinkfield Marsh, Brinkburn and Brankin Moor and also pleasant riverside walks along the Skerne at Riverside Park and the Tees at Broken Scar.

There is plenty to discover and enjoy in the area, so if you are looking to make the move to Darlington, call JW Wood today on 01325 485151.
