Keep Your Home Cool This Summer with JW Wood Estate Agents

The summer sun is a welcome sight after a long winter. But while we enjoy the sunshine, our homes often struggle with the heat. To help you stay cool, we spoke to Greig Millar, an OVO Energy Expert, for his top tips on keeping your home comfortable this summer.

Top 5 Tips for Keeping Your Home Cool

1. Get Wise with Your Windows

Create a cross-breeze by opening windows on opposite walls or ends of your home. Open windows at night to let in cool air and close them during the day to trap it inside. Pointing a fan at an open window can help push hot air outside.

2. Block Out the Sun

Keep windows closed during the day, especially south-facing ones. Use curtains or blinds to block direct sunlight. Open windows on the shaded side of your home to keep hot air out.

3. Be Frugal with Your Fan

Place fans on the floor and point them upwards to circulate cooler air. Position them towards opposite walls to bounce cool air back into the room. Use a timer to reduce energy consumption.

4. Switch Up Your Lightbulbs

Traditional bulbs emit 90% of their energy as heat. Switch to LED bulbs to reduce heat and energy use, saving money while keeping your home cooler.

5. Insulate, Insulate, Insulate!

Insulation helps keep your home cool in summer as well as warm in winter. Start with loft insulation, and use draught excluders and foam tape around doors to maintain cool air inside.

Key Points to Remember

  1. Let cool air in at night.
  2. Keep hot air out during the day.
  3. Limit heat from sunlight.

Beat the Heat While You Sleep

1. Take a Cool Shower Before Bed

A quick cool shower before bed can help lower your body temperature for a more comfortable sleep.

2. Turn Your Hot Water Bottle into an Ice Pack

Fill a hot water bottle with water and freeze it. Use it to cool down by placing it in your bed or under your feet.
